About Bangers & Smash

Musical fun for little smashers

Kitty Pidduck

Kitty Pidduck

Founded by musicians, Kitty Pidduck (guitar/voice) and Sarah Allen (flute/accordion), Bangers & Smash have been creating musical fun for little smashers since 1987.

After training at Community Music (now CM), Kitty and Sarah went on to run music sessions in Early Years, Primary and community settings and at festivals and fun days across London as Bangers & Smash.

Their enormously popular sessions have been successfully received in nurseries, children's centres, schools and libraries in Camden, Croydon, Greenwich, Haringey, Hackney, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Islington, Kensington, Lambeth, Lewisham, Southwark, Waltham Forest, Westminster and Wandsworth.

While Sarah went on to garner fame on the folk scene with award-winning quartet, Flook, Kitty continues to teach, write and perform as Bangers & Smash – occasionally joined by Sarah as a special guest.

She provides regular, bespoke and online sessions as well as entertainment for children’s parties. Fun, creative and educational, sessions include the opportunity to sing, play instruments and listen and move to music – both live and recorded – including original Bangers & Smash songs.

Bangers & Smash celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2017 and continue to educate and entertain little smashers across the capital!

Live & kicking

At Bangers & Smash, we like to keep our sessions kicking and our music live.

While it's great to listen and sing along to recorded music, there's nothing like live instruments to get the party going. It's also fantastic for little smashers to experience everything that goes with live sound: the thump of the drums; the trill of the flute; the wail of the saxophone.

Loud or soft, groovy or mellow – live music is at the heart of the Bangers & Smash message. Help keep it live with Bangers & Smash!

What does Ofsted think of our teaching?

Occasionally, our work is inspected by Ofsted. Here's what they've said...

'Music is a real strength of the nursery. A visiting music teacher gives the children excellent opportunities to learn unusual and interesting songs and to compose their own about events in their lives such as visiting the seaside. In these sessions, the children are taught to recognise simple rhythms, to hear music from different cultures and to play instruments such as drums. They listen well to music played on a guitar, moving gently to the rhythm.'

Ofsted report – Mother Goose Nursery, Peckham

'Teaching is good. All classes are taught by the same teacher, who is an excellent musician and who is an experienced performer. This inspires many pupils to perform, who may not otherwise have had the confidence to perform. All teaching is of good quality and there are several very good features. The teacher demonstrates what she wants pupils to do. They follow willingly. Relationships are very good and making music is fun. All want to take part. Music-making is ambitious and really gives the pupils the chance to find out what they can do.'

Ofsted report – Hitherfield Primary School, Streatham

‘Children benefit from a broad range of interesting and enriching activities and experiences. Staff have high expectations for children and effectively boost children's confidence as they play and learn. This is evident when children participate in highly engaging music lessons with a teacher who plays the guitar. Together, they sing songs from around the world, dance and experiment with different instruments. Young babies delight when singing action songs and reading familiar stories, and their emerging language development is promoted extremely well.’
