Singing a Rainbow with Bangers & Smash

This Spring, we sang about the colours of the rainbow at Bangers & Smash!

Kitty ran sessions at regular Bangers & Smash nurseries, Purple Jay Herne Hill Dulwich, The Oval Montessori, Crystal Nurseries, Under the Willow and School Outdoors Dulwich.

She was also delighted to welcome four more Purple Jay nurseries to the Bangers & Smash family – Lambeth, East Dulwich, Peckham Rye and Lewisham!

Singing a Rainbow

Children and staff enjoyed:

  • singing a new hello song, Dulce, Dulce

  • practising the names of different colours and singing Bangers & Smash original, Colourful Clothes

  • taking it in turns to play a rainbow-coloured rainstick and singing I Can Sing A Rainbow

White

  • looking at a picture book, Four Seasons In One Day, and thinking about what colours we see in Winter

  • learning a poem about a snowball, Make A Little Snowball

  • singing a song about snowflakes, Three Little Snowflakes

  • closing their eyes and listening to an excerpt from Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky while Kitty trailed a feather boa across their faces

  • using metal instruments (tuned bells and chime bars) to make snow music

  • sitting in a circle and bouncing a silver decoration on a white sheet while listening to Winter by Vivaldi

Red and gold

  • looking at a red music box and trying to guess what song it was playing (Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star)

  • taking it in turns to wear Chinese hats while singing a hello song in Mandarin, Ni Hao Ma

  • looking at pictures of Chinese children and identifying what colours their clothes were (red and gold)

  • passing a den-den-daiko drum around the circle

  • listening to three different-sized cymbals from Thailand and asking if they make:

    • a loud sound or a quiet sound?

    • a long sound or a short sound?

    • a high sound or a low sound?

  • singing a song in Mandarin, Gong Hey Fat Choy, in celebration of Lunar New Year

  • learning a poem about a dragon and parading round to a tambourine accompaniment

  • looking at a wooden horse from China and dancing with red and yellow scarves to a piece of music from Mongolia, The Horse Race

  • singing a song for Valentine’s Day, I Love You

  • learning actions to a Doris Day song, A Bushel And APeck, and performing it with red scarves

blue

  • taking it in turns to make the sound of the sea with a wooden rainstick

  • sitting in a circle and bouncing a blue cloth while singing Little Ripples then adding in a mermaid, a whale and two fish

  • learning actions and singing along to Baby Beluga by Raffi

  • performing The Big Ship Sails On The Alley, Alley-Oh as a circle dance

green

  • looking at a toy frog and singing an action song, Little Green Frog

  • looking at a picture of a tree and singing Roots, Trunks, Branches, Leaves to the tune of Head, Shoulders, Knees And Toes

  • finding different ways to play claves while singing If You’re Ever In The Forest

  • looking at some plastic dinosaurs and singing:

    • Ten Big Dinosaurs (babies and toddlers)

    • When a Dinosaur’s Feeling Hungry (preschoolers)

  • dancing with a green soft toy dinosaur to Walk the Dinosaur by Was Not Was

purple

  • dancing to The Purple People Eater by Sheb Wooley

YELLOW

  • learning a poem about a banana and dancing to Banana, Banana, Banana by the Kew Park Mento Band

  • looking at some toy ducks and singing:

    • Five Little Ducks Went Swimming One Day

    • Six Little Ducks That I Once Knew

  • parading round in a circle to Ducks Like Rain by Raffi

Celebrating Easter

We finished off the term with songs celebrating Easter, including:

  • The Easter Bunny

  • Hey, Little Hen

  • Chick, Chick, Chicken

  • There Ain’t Nobody Here But Us Chickens

  • The Easter Parade
